Skills Programmes - Welding & Metalwork

This training equips learners with foundational knowledge in welding processes, metal cutting, and workshop safety. It includes practical skills in Arc, MIG, and TIG welding, as well as oxyacetylene cutting and spray painting. Participants will also develop competencies in tool usage and interpreting weld schematics. The program aims to prepare trainees for roles such as welder, metal fabricator, or workshop assistant in industries such as construction, manufacturing, or automotive repair.

Programme Structure

Phase 1

  • General workshop safety rules and practices
  • Safety signs and colour coding Extinguishing substances and fire fighting
  • Basic hand tools and measuring equipment
  • Description and schematics of typical welds
  • Arc Welding
  • Oxy-Acetylene gas cutting Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, consumables and gases
  • Metal Bending
  • Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding, consumables and gases
  • Painting - Conventional and spray painting
  • Metal Cutting
Integrates various components such as classroom sessions, introductory safety workshops, and foundational theoretical modules to establish a strong educational base. As students progress, they engage in advanced practical workshops, collaborative group projects, and individual assignments designed to enhance their expertise and deepen their understanding. The initial months focuses on core trade principles, basic concepts, and essential safety practices, whereafter students advance to developing in-depth technical skills, mastering problem-solving strategies, and applying theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios.
CV Writing & Interview Prep – Build a strong CV and practice answering common interview questions.
Professional Conduct – Learn workplace ethics, dress code, and communication etiquette.
Time & Project Management – Manage daily tasks, meet deadlines, and work in teams.
Teamwork & Leadership – Understand roles, take initiative, and collaborate effectively.
Confidence & Career Planning – Set personal goals and explore future opportunities.

Duration: 4 Weeks
Minimum Group Size: 5 delegates

Entry Requirements:

  • Grade 10 with Mathematics
    or Mathematics Literacy
  • EGD Recommended
