Skills Programmes - Civil & Carpentry

The program offers hands-on training in basic civil construction. Learners gain skills in bricklaying, concrete mixing, glasswork, roofing structures, and door installations, with an emphasis on safety and accuracy. It also includes basic drawing interpretation and surface preparation for painting. This training aims to prepare individuals for employment as general builders or maintenance workers in the construction and home improvement sectors. Lunch is included on Training Days.

Programme Structure

Phase 1

Civil Module 1: Site Safety & Basic Tools

Duration: 2 Days
Focus: Foundation civil competence

Competencies Covered:

  • General workshop and site safety
  • Safety signs and colour coding
  • PPE requirements
  • Basic hand tools and measuring equipment
  • Safe handling of materials
Integrates various components such as classroom sessions, introductory safety workshops, and foundational theoretical modules to establish a strong educational base. As students progress, they engage in advanced practical workshops, collaborative group projects, and individual assignments designed to enhance their expertise and deepen their understanding. The initial months focuses on core trade principles, basic concepts, and essential safety practices, whereafter students advance to developing in-depth technical skills, mastering problem-solving strategies, and applying theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios.

Civil Module 2: Mortar, Concrete & Brickwork

Duration: 4 Days
Focus: Core civil construction skills

Competencies Covered:

  • Mortar and concrete mixing
  • Brickworks (dry packing)
  • Building a one-brick wall (stretcher bond)
  • Use of spirit level, plumb line, and tape
  • Quality checks and accuracy

Civil Module 3: Structural Installations

Duration: 2 Days
Focus: Building installations

Competencies Covered:

  • Fixing door frames
  • Fixing window frames
  • Basic alignment and securing methods
  • Practical installation tasks

Civil Module 4: Finishing & Surface Preparation

Duration: 2 Days
Focus: Finishing and presentation

Competencies Covered:

  • Glasswork basics
  • Preparing surfaces for painting (theory & practice)
  • Paint types and application (theory)
  • Prepare and paint a surface
